The R Word

I'm sure many of you have seen this video by now, especially if you caught the Season Finale of Glee!  However, just in case anyone missed it, I absolutely had to share.  The message is a little shocking, a lot powerful, and very relevant.  Working with college students I regularly pull my residents aside to have a conversation about an inappropriate word choice, and so I'm seriously considering putting this PSA on repeat in my building's lobby--it would definitely save me a lot of jabbering.

And so I'd love to know how this commercial made you feel.  Is there EVER an ok time to use these words?  Do you correct people when they use offensive language around you?  I love our discussions, so I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts!

  1. I am in utter disbelief that adult people might still choose to use the word retarded (or any sort of derogatory language). I think its because the people I surround myself with would never use words like that, so when I hear it being said by someone who should know better I'm always in shock. Depending on the situation, sometimes I speak up and sometimes I don't. If its someone I know, then I will say something like "that's not funny" or "that's not cool." But, if I don't know the person and just happen to hear them say it I'm likely to not say anything.

  2. I tend to try and lead more by example than by admonition, mostly because I am not good with conflict :). You know how some people go through life without really *seeing* what's around them? They don't really *know* their friends or make observations? They are not inherently bad people but they tend to not be very selective about what enters their minds and exits their mouths. If more people really thought about the words they use, this world would be a whole lot kinder.
